Current Bird Numbers: The DNR area bird count as of last week was 10,000 ducks.
2017 Hunter Bird Take Stands at: 1955 Ducks and 000 Geese
Refuge counts were difficult this week, with birds hanging tight to the corn cover on the warm sunny days. We’re still comfortably in the 10-12,000 bird range, with little change in the overall distribution apart from a slight decline in wood ducks and a little increase in pintail and teal. I expect to see a substantial increase in numbers with the cooler weather this week.
Hunting conditions are very good across the area, with excellent corn cover and good water levels. I’ll put a fewmore inches into the west side zones before the end of the month and just a bit of water into the 20’s, but levels are very good for where we’re at in the season.
