Shiawassee River State Game Area Report 10-22-2017

Oct 22nd 2017 – Managers Update –
Current Bird Numbers: The DNR area bird count as of last week was 13,146 ducks and 920 geese.
2017 Hunter Bird Take Stands at: 2158 Ducks and 235 Geese

Area Condition Update: We continue to see increasing mallard numbers, while blue-winged teal appear to be essentially gone from the area. Hunters brought in more pintails last week than we have seen all season, indicating that last week’s cool temperatures and strong north wind brought some migrant ducks down. The waterfowl that was using the area earlier in the week seems to be have been here a while they know where the refuge is. At the tail end of the week it seems that we have had some new birds move in.

Crops overall on the area are good. All the fields are flooded with all hunting zones having at least
enough water to pull your boat into. We added 6 inches of water to the 30’s and 40’s fields and 4
inches into 1-5. Mother nature added an additional 3.5 inches of rain to all fields.
