Oct 18th 2017 – Managers Update –
Current Bird Numbers: The DNR area bird count as of last week was 2750 ducks and 290 geese.
2017 Hunter Bird Take Stands at: 854 Ducks and 314 Geese
Area Condition Update: Bird numbers in the refuge remain steady. When the refuge count is done this week we will probably see an increase in the count numbers.
Crops overall on the area are good. This week we will continue with the flooding program here. We are bringing up the water in the 30’s and 40’s fields. For the next 7 to 10 days the flooding in 6-8, 9-14, 55-60 and 61-66 will remain the same. We have experienced pump failures at B2 with first the electric motor shorting out then the top bearing going out of the pump and finally we must have lost either a blade off of the impeller or bottom bearing failure. We set the gator pump up by the B2 pump station and that will be the means for flooding the north part of the area for the rest of the season (B2 pump station is scheduled for replacement in 2018).
